Last week a dear friend of mine from Bugnay passed away. She left behind three small children. The oldest born at Georgia's clinic in 2007 and the youngest only nine months old. She had just traveled to Tabuk a few weeks before and was completely fine. I had even sat with her while she washed dishes several times and we joked about my relationship status. She was one of the few I had on my side for staying single. Her smile could brighten your darkest day and her laugh was a melody that could cheer the saddest soul. Sweet Dessa you are greatly missed... she's on my left in the picture below...
A few days ago we received word that one of our patients from Lacnog (a village where we do monthly outreaches) had developed eclampsia. She was only 17 years old and expecting twins. Eclampsia stole all three lives. Many of the girls at the clinic knew her well.
When I first arrived in the Philippines a young friend of my sister's died and I remember her saying, "Some people need a long lifetime to make an impact while others only need a few years." Are you doing all that you could be doing to make a difference in the world?
The past several months I've been pondering the verse:
“you do not even know what will happen tomorrow. What is your life?
You are a mist that appears for a little
while then vanishes.” –James 4:14
And the question I keep asking myself, " Am I living in such a way that it shows I
believe my life here on Earth is just a vapor?" Am I? Are you?
In remembering sweet Dessa I hope I never forget the power behind a smile and never take for granted the sound of laughter.
I keep hearing HEAVY SIGHS that say
forgive us for going on with our lives
as though you were still with us.
