Can you see my bittersweet remembrance? I can no longer say I've never fallen off a mountain (:
Our last day in Bugnay we decided to go for a picnic at the river to celebrate the success of our outreaches. We were all verging exhaustion but decided to go anyways to where ever the boys wanted. Well that was our first mistake. They took us on this hike along the rice fields while the view was gorgeous it was the hardest hike ever! I'd been to the river a million times it takes 10 minutes max! Where were we hiking back to Tabuk? So I'm walking along these tiny stones at the edge of the rice fields... there was a gap between two with a patch of grass so I put my left foot on the grass and raise my right to step on the next small stone... when holy freaking I don't know how I did it...
the grass was slippery and down down I went! I heard the tough Butbut man behind me squealing like a girl and I slid.... I stopped breathless at the edge of a huge dropoff... I was scared to move for fear of sliding farther... but luckily a handsome Butbut man was there to rescue me. I continued on my journey, enjoyed the picnic and survived the hike back.
I kept telling myself I didn't hurt while my American brain was saying you need x-rays. Your ankle is definately sprained and your arm may be broken. I tended to my cuts that I knew how to repair and popped aleve in my mouth. An old lady looked at me then asked how I fell ... she started a ruckus in Whinuthut... I cringed at her words...this was going to HURT! She had sent the kids on a mission to find a traditional hilot to massage my sprains. The hilot arrived and promptly demanded to know if I was drunk?!? NO I laughed I wasn't drunk. Then I realized that was the greatest compliment I'd ever received as she went on to tell me that I knew how to walk along the rice fields and needed a reason for my fall. We decided to blame my American flipflops that are more slippery than Filippino ones! Oh I won't lie the massage hurt worse than words can describe but I maintained a smile and the next day climbed 500 stairs... thanks Dr.Awwa!
Yucks! It's going to take awhile to completely heal but the smile on my face is still as big as ever!
